Artist Biography

Wood is a tactile material, and my furniture designs are a bold and assertive exploration of that quality. This is not furniture that sits quietly In the corner. These one of a kind pieces are composed of domestic and exotic hardwoods, and assembled with time honored techniques.

Each piece of furniture I build begins with past pieces in some form or some idea or detail I wish to further explore. These aspects of past pieces evolve and mature within my new work. Furniture making like this becomes equal parts building and learning, a process that keeps my work honest and alive. Once a craftsman’s work becomes more of an exploration than an exercise, each aspect is excited and it shows in the outcome.

Each piece is finished with a hand rubbed oil finish that further enhances this tactile nature of wood, rather than acting as a boundary to touch. After several years when most finishes have faded and cracked, your piece has mellowed and warmed. This is furniture to be used, and the finish offers total protection to whatever life spills over onto it.

The stone I am using is a very unusual sandstone that comes out of the ground as a boulder that has been under the pressure of the West Virginia mountains, and for that reason has the hardness of a granite.
