Artist Biography

A retired engineer, Jerry has been working with wood for over 12 years.

His work is on display in several galleries. He has also received awards for his work through various juried shows and contests. He is the past president and past secretary of the Mid-Columbia Woodturners, which is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners.

Artist's Statement

My interest and respect for fine woodworking started as a child watching my father do many wonderful things with wood. He was an expert craftsman for fine furniture and marquetry. I started with my first lathe when I was a teen-ager. As I neared retirement, I once again found a fascination with lathe-turned objects.

I am always looking for new and different concepts for my woodturning; these include surface textures, multi-axis turning, multi-media items and embellishment with carving. I am now exploring sculpture with various types of woods.

Use of wood a medium for art work offers the observer a chance to see the fine work of nature in the ever endless patterns of the wood grain. My favorite choices of wood are the burls, which are an abnormal growth on a tree. My work has used burls from maple, redwood and manzanita trees.
