Gordon started woodworking at an early age, receiving instruction
from his father. For many years he was fascinated by mechanical
things and how to build them in the family workshop.
He continued his interest in college where he studied design,
mechanics and engineering. Throughout his life, he has enjoyed
making original, one of a kind pieces of furniture and sculpture
in wood. He is now designing moving sculpture. He enjoys the challenges
of creating designs that relate to the natural world and are made
from elements of it. Experiencing a piece should engage an observer
through sound and touch as well as sight.
He believes pieces executed in wood have properties unmatched
by any other material, making for deep, beautiful, nuanced surfaces.
“Every tree is unique as is the wood that comes from it.
No two items I’ve made have ever been exactly alike and
each has their own character.”
Born in the Midwest, he now lives and works in Fremont, California.
He does all his work from a small studio, specializing in detailed
handwork.
